Nottingham University Hospitals Trust aimed to expand their paediatric services and enhance safeguarding measures for young patients. The new facility required clinical areas, office areas, waiting rooms and accessible toilets. Building on a successful partnership from previous projects, the Trust once again selected Wernick due to our proposed Service Level Agreement (SLA) and efficient project timeline.

Solutions

Wernick Refurbished Buildings delivered a bespoke solution consisting of 20 modules to create a 2-storey, 10’ on 10’ modular building. Given the location on a flood plain, the building had to be elevated. The substructure foundations were constructed to a depth of 1.5 metres, requiring the inclusion of ramps for patient access.

Two toilets were incorporated based on the “Changing Places” concept to cater to the needs of patients with mobility challenges. A 1000kg platform lift was installed, along with access control systems throughout the building, ensuring ease of movement and security for the patients. The exterior was finished with plastic-coated steel in the hospital’s brand colours, creating a professional appearance.

Wernick faced and successfully overcame several challenges, including adhering to the stringent Hospital Technical Memorandum requirements and specific Trust regulations. These included complex water system installations, fire detection systems, fire stopping and specialised electrical equipment needs.

Through meticulous planning and execution, Wernick ensured that the new Mobility Modular Annexe met all the Trust’s requirements, providing a safe, functional and efficient space for paediatric care.

The choice to opt for a modular building was driven by our urgent need to address safeguarding issues swiftly. We required the building within a specific timeframe and Wernick provided a timely and effective solution. The Contracts Manager was very receptive to my many questions and responded very quickly. I would absolutely recommend a refurbished offsite build, you wouldn’t even realise this building is modular.
