SEND classroom for Brooklands School
Requirement
Brooklands School is a middle school in Leighton Buzzard that requires a SEND classroom to support its new autism provision. To meet this need, the school collaborated with the Central Bedfordshire Council, aiming to create a functional space that could accommodate more students with special educational needs.
Wernick Refurbished Buildings was chosen for the project due to its long-standing relationship with Central Bedfordshire Council, having successfully completed five projects within the last two years. The Council was impressed by the quality of previous buildings and Wernick’s ability to meet tight deadlines. A swift solution was critical to avoid disrupting students’ learning, which is why the classroom was installed during the summer holidays.

Solution
Wernick Refurbished Buildings delivered a 7-bay, single-storey modular building tailored to the school’s specific needs. The design included two large classroom spaces with a separating viewing window, along with additional specialised areas: a breakout room, a multi-use room, a calming room, a kitchen and toilet facilities.
To further enhance the learning environment, Wernick also constructed an external canopy, providing sheltered outdoor space for students. The building was designed to be spacious, well-lit and safe—an ideal setting for students to learn and thrive.
Given the school’s need for a quick turnaround, modular construction was the ideal solution. This method allowed for rapid installation, ensuring the new facility was ready for use as soon as the students returned from their summer holidays.
Wernick provided a comprehensive turnkey solution, handling every aspect of the project from design to completion. In addition to designing and installing the modular building, Wernick’s team completed all necessary groundworks, including an external play area, a new car park, pathways, secure fencing, connection to mains services and the installation of a foul sewage treatment plant.
The use of refurbished modular buildings not only ensured speed and cost-efficiency but also offered significant environmental benefits. For schools like Brooklands that require additional space quickly and cost-effectively, this approach proved to be an excellent choice.
The staff and children are very happy with their new provision, which is our main objective. Wernick provided excellent communication, regular updates and were quick to respond to our requests while respecting the school grounds. Thank you, Wernick, it is appreciated.
