Battery Storage Solutions: Smarter temporary power for modern sites
As businesses look for more efficient ways to manage temporary power, battery storage solutions are becoming an increasingly important part of the energy mix.
At Wernick Power Solutions, we continue to invest in battery storage technology to help customers reduce generator runtime, lower fuel consumption and emissions, and improve the overall efficiency of temporary power systems.
Our intelligent battery storage solution, VoltBank, can be integrated with generators and other technologies to create a hybrid power system that responds more efficiently to changing site demand.
How do battery storage solutions work?
Temporary power requirements rarely remain constant throughout the day. While generators may need to accommodate periods of high demand, there are often extended periods where considerably less power is required.
This is where battery storage units can make a significant difference.
A VoltBank can charge while the generator is operating and store energy for use later. During periods of lower demand, the battery can take over and supply power without the generator needing to run continuously. When demand increases, the battery and generator can work together to provide the power required.
This demand-led approach allows power to be generated, stored and used more efficiently.
Reducing generator runtime, fuel and emissions
One of the biggest advantages of combining a generator with a battery storage unit is the ability to reduce unnecessary generator runtime.
Instead of operating continuously to support relatively small loads, the generator can switch off while stored battery energy supplies the site.
Reducing generator runtime can provide several benefits, including:
- Lower fuel consumption and operating costs
- Reduced CO₂ and NOx emissions
- Increased silent running periods
- Reduced noise and air pollution
- Improved generator efficiency
- Greater flexibility across changing power demands
For sites operating close to residential areas or where noise restrictions apply, the ability to provide periods of silent battery power can be particularly valuable.
Battery storage proven in real-world applications
The benefits of battery storage are already being demonstrated across Wernick Power Solutions projects.
At Clyde Marine’s Greenock site, for example, Wernick introduced a 45kWh battery storage unit alongside an existing 100kVA generator. In just four weeks, the solution saved 3,429 litres of diesel and £3,000 in costs, while reducing CO₂ emissions by 12,837kg and delivering 421 hours of silent running.
On a separate energy sector project in Norfolk, a large-scale hybrid battery and generator solution saved 60,599 litres of fuel, 196 tonnes of CO₂ and 2,978 generator running hours.
These results demonstrate how selecting and configuring the right battery storage solution can deliver measurable operational and environmental benefits.
Continuing to invest in battery storage
As power requirements evolve, so does our battery storage fleet.
Wernick Power Solutions continues to invest in battery storage units across a range of capacities, allowing us to support increasingly varied and demanding applications.
Our growing fleet includes high-capacity 200kVA / 165kWh VoltBank units, designed to support larger temporary power requirements. Multiple units can also be synchronised where additional capacity is required, providing greater scalability for complex projects.
This continued investment means battery storage is no longer limited to smaller site loads. It can increasingly form part of larger-scale hybrid power strategies across construction, infrastructure, utilities, industrial projects, events and other applications.
Going beyond battery storage
The greatest efficiencies can often be achieved by looking at the complete power system rather than individual pieces of equipment.
VoltBank can be combined with compatible generators as well as renewable technologies such as Wernick Power Solutions’ SolarFrame and SolarFrame Plus. Intelligent control and monitoring can then provide greater visibility over how energy is being generated and consumed.
By understanding site load profiles and actual power demand, our teams can help identify where battery storage, generator optimisation and renewable generation can work together to reduce unnecessary energy use.
The result is a smarter, more flexible approach to temporary power.
Finding the right battery storage solution
Every project has different power requirements, which is why battery storage should not be approached as a one-size-fits-all solution.
Generator size, peak demand, base load, operating hours and site conditions can all influence the most effective system configuration.
Wernick Power Solutions can assess these requirements and develop a tailored temporary power solution incorporating battery storage where it can deliver meaningful operational, financial and environmental benefits.
