Wernick Power Solutions generator, voltbank and fuel store at Clyde Marine

Challenge

Clyde Marine, a dynamic provider of top-tier marine services, already had a 100kVA generator and fuel tank on hire from Wernick Power Solutions at their Greenock site. They rely on Wernick’s equipment to supply shore power to their fleet of modern tugs. However, with the generator constantly running to power the tugs docked at the quay, Clyde Marine sought a way to implement fuel management to reduce both their white diesel consumption and carbon emissions.

  • Project name: Clyde Marine
  • Sector: Military
  • Location: Scotland
  • Solution provided: 100kVA generator, 45kW Voltbank & Fuel Tank
  • Features: Reduced fuel consumption, reduced Co2 emissions & silent running hours in a residential area
  • Savings: Cost: £3000, Fuel: 3429 litres, Silent running: 421 hours,

Solution

Wernick Power Solutions proposed a free two-week trial period of a 45kWh battery storage unit. The battery hybrid application ensured a reduction in fuel consumption, lower Co2 emissions and an overall decrease in cost for the client. At the end of the trial, telemetry was provided to Clyde Marine to analyse their savings.

Result

The trial project with Clyde Marine was a success, leading the client to keep the battery storage unit on-site for around 12 months. In just four weeks, the battery storage saved Clyde Marine £3,000 and reduced CO₂ emissions by 12,837 kg. Additionally, they conserved 3,429 litres of white diesel and achieved 421 silent running hours, with a total of 66% of the operation time being silent.

“Regional Sales Manager, Karen, offered us the latest battery technology to see if we could utilise it in our operations to make savings and reduce our CO2 emissions. After our trial and data, there was no thinking involved to sign for the battery. Not seeing the fuel tanker in our yard every week to once a month was a great visual indication that we are saving.

The solution has worked superbly saving us in many areas. Reduced fuel use and therefore reduced CO2 emissions, allowing us to bring some of our ESG aims to fruition. Our neighbours are happier as the generator is now only running 44% of the time compared to what it was doing. There has been no disruption as the unit is simply plug and play, and no reduction in available capacity. Unit support is available instantly by Wernick as they have live data feed from the LIVELINK application installed on the units.”
