Leeds Beckett University
Requirement
The client, Downing, is contracted to deliver a state-of-the-art facility for the arts in the centre of Leeds. The new Leeds Beckett campus building will be home to the university’s School of Film, Music and Performing Arts, plus the fashion department. It is due for completion in September 2020.
Welfare facilities for construction staff as well as office space for managers and administration staff are required on site for the duration of the project. Due to the site’s city centre location, accommodation needs to be secure and anti-vandal with robust features to withstand the regular comings and goings of construction staff.
Offices need to be compact yet spacious and offer a comfortable, temperature-controlled environment for staff.

Solution
The client chose AVflex® units from Wernick Hire after positive experiences using the product and establishing a good relationship with the depot. A small area on site for welfare accommodation also helped steer the client to AVflex® units – they eliminate the need for traditional linking corridors between adjoining units, creating more internal space and reducing the overall site footprint.
As the project progressed, extra levels were added to the building. Welfare facilities, including canteens, with a boiling water supply, changing areas and a drying room are on the ground floor. Open plan offices are on the third and fourth floor.
The fourth floor was installed during a weekend to minimise disruption to traffic flow and surrounding buildings. A 100m tower crane, already on site, was used for the install. Wernick worked closely with the client to plan the lifting with precision.
The service from Wernick has been great and the depot responds to any queries quickly.
We needed to work collaboratively to load the units onto the site and Wernick made that a straight-forward process.
