KBSK’s new support hub and dance studio

Requirement

KBSK Performing Arts is a dance school located in Bodmin, Cornwall. The client required a dance studio to act as a base for the school as they were originally hiring spaces to accommodate these classes. Having their own space would mean they could offer a hub and a safe space for the students.

Over the years, KBSK has evolved into more than just a performing arts school—it has become a vital support system for hundreds of local families. The organisation provides a safe, accessible space for young people, many of whom come from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, and works with families facing financial and social challenges.

KBSK’s outreach extends beyond dance, offering crucial support to families dealing with mental health struggles, financial hardship and complex needs, such as autism, ADHD and sensory impairments. The organisation also plays a significant role in the community by distributing food parcels, making referrals to support services and helping families with urgent needs like housing, bills and mental health support.

Initiated through the Fusion21 Youth Investment Fund Framework, the project required Wernick Refurbished Buildings to provide 50 Social Value Service Credits, supporting KBSK’s mission. Wernick chose to donate in the “Wider Social Value Support to Local Community” category to reach these credits.

Solution

Wernick Refurbished Buildings delivered an 11-bay modular building, now known as “The Space” which includes a fully equipped dance studio, an administrative office, a canteen, toilets and a cleaners’ storage area. This new facility provides KBSK with the infrastructure needed to continue offering its life-changing programmes while expanding its reach to even more children and families in need.

The refurbished modular buildings used for this dance studio were purchased from the portfolio of a modular construction company. Wernick purchased 153 modules, 11 of which were carefully refurbished to create the new facility, providing a sustainable cost-effective solution.

In addition to the modular construction, Wernick provided a full turnkey solution, managing the entire process from groundworks to completion. This included mains connections, the installation of ramps and steps and comprehensive site preparation. The building’s exterior was finished in durable steel, ensuring longevity and a professional appearance.

As part of its commitment to the Fusion21 framework, Wernick donated £5,000 to KBSK’s “Kick Back at the Cost of Living” initiative. This project provides critical support to families affected by food poverty and financial hardship, helping them cover basic living expenses such as food and heating. With this donation, KBSK was able to extend its support to an additional 56 families, continuing its vital work in helping vulnerable families avoid eviction, stay warm and feed their children.

KBSK’s impact on the local community is profound, offering not only arts education but also direct assistance to those facing difficult circumstances. By partnering with Wernick, the organisation has been able to enhance its capacity to uplift the lives of local children and their families.

Your Wernick team has been excellent. I got a sneak peek inside the building and I was honestly reduced to tears. We have received such amazing feedback from the young people, it’s a space they truly feel safe. I could not be any happier.
