Iori Edwards – Assistant Pre-construction Project Manager
Iori Edwards completed a year in industry at Wernick Buildings as part of his university course. Iori graduated from Swansea University with first-class honours in Civil Engineering. He now works with Wernick full-time as Assistant Pre-construction Project Manager.
What made you choose to do a year in industry?
I chose to do a year in industry because I wanted to gain hands-on experience within the industry that would set me apart from my peers.
What made you choose Wernick?
Wernick stood out to me because of its specialisation in modular construction, an area I was particularly interested in due to its rapid growth and innovative approach to building. Wernick’s values and its reputation as a family-run business greatly gained my interest as I felt their values personally related to my own.
How was your year in industry at Wernick?
My year at Wernick was incredibly rewarding. I was able to build strong relationships with my colleagues and mentors, who provided me with guidance and support throughout my internship. While at Wernick, they invested heavily in my professional development, offering extensive training that included first aid, SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme), ladder inspection and various in-house programmes. These training programmes equipped me with practical skills that I will carry with me throughout my career.
During my time at Wernick, I gained a comprehensive understanding of the modular construction process, from the manufacturing of units to their installation on-site and eventual handover. I learned the importance of meeting deadlines, effectively managing construction sites and maintaining detailed site documentation, such as site diaries, 2-week programmes and construction plans. Additionally, I gained insights into how design concepts are translated into on-site realities and the challenges that can arise during this process, along with strategies to address them.
After you graduated, what made you choose to return to Wernick?
Wernick reached out to me with a job offer after I completed my degree. Having enjoyed my previous experience with the company, I was excited to explore the opportunity further. After a successful interview, I was pleased to accept the position, knowing that Wernick was a place where I could continue to grow.
I look forward to continuing my development within the company and excited about the opportunities ahead.
