Wernick collaborates with the University of York for internship opportunities

At Wernick, we believe in supporting the next generation of talent and promoting professional growth within our industry. One way we do this is by offering internship opportunities across our Head Office and manufacturing locations. We provide valuable training and development opportunities to individuals eager to advance their careers.
In May 2023, we welcomed Alarmel Valli (Alar) for an internship at our Wernick Refurbished Buildings factory in York. Alar focused on quantifying and establishing the embodied carbon emissions of refurbished modular buildings compared to newly built ones. Her attention to detail and eagerness to learn quickly established her as a valuable member of the Wernick team.
Alar’s internship not only benefited the factory but also contributed to her personal and academic development. As a student pursuing an MSc in Sustainability Science at the University of York, her work at Wernick aligned closely with her studies and helped her develop her dissertation.
By the end of the internship, Alar produced a research report on the embodied carbon of refurbished modular buildings compared to newly built modular buildings. This report has given Wernick crucial evidence to support new projects and better understand our manufacturing process, enabling us to optimise our practices and showcase our unique selling point.
Alar gained valuable experience in the modular building sector, expanding her knowledge in waste, water, and carbon assessment while strengthening her academic record through her time with us. This opportunity led to a full-time role for Alar, who has now joined Wernick Group as a Sustainability Social Value Advisor. Her responsibilities have expanded from focusing on carbon and net zero to exploring broader social value initiatives.
At Wernick, we remain committed to promoting internships across the Group. In 2024, we will offer two internships in collaboration with the University of York as part of our ongoing dedication to sustainability.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Wernick for entrusting me with the research project and for the unwavering support provided during the period of study which enabled me to complete my Master’s successfully. As someone who is passionate about sustainability, I’m genuinely privileged and extremely grateful for being considered for a full-time position as a Sustainability Social Value Advisor which marks the beginning of my career journey in the field of sustainability. Glad to be a part of an organisation that aims in providing a career rather than just a job to its employees. It’s highly fortunate to take up a role that allows me to get involved in projects that prioritises leaving a positive impact on the environment, aids in the well-being of the community and paves a way for me to contribute back to the society.”
