MD of Wernick Construction, Ben Wernick, has completed three separate ultra-marathons for Devon Air Ambulance. Ben ran over 177 miles in total, across some of the roughest terrains in Wales. His efforts have raised thousands for charity.

Brecon to Cardiff

The runs, organised by ‘Run, Walk, Crawl’ bring the ultra-running experience to the South Wales coastline. The first event took place in February, a 45 mile run from Brecon to Cardiff. Despite the inclement weather and some nerves regarding having the right kit, Ben placed a very respectable 5th place in 6 hours and 4 minutes. With the charity donations in mind, and motived by “raw competitiveness”, Ben went on to complete the next challenge in April – a 32 mile run from Cardiff to Ogmore-By-Sea.

Cardiff to Ogmore-By-Sea

Ben headed to the front of the runners, learning from the previous race and hoping to shave valuable minutes from his time. At 26.2 miles, Ben realised that there was no-one behind him – a positive sign that he would place in the top group. The coastline provided a stunning backdrop, with Ben remarking that this route would make for a pleasing ‘stroll’! Ben finished 3rd in just 4 hours and 55 minutes.

Pembrokeshire 100 Mile Race

On the 12th May, Ben took his place with 32 other runners for the Pembrokeshire 100 Mile Race (yes, you read that right). In baking heat, Ben traversed the rocky terrain ‘aided’ by a GPS file on his watch. As it got dark, and the paths less obvious, navigation proved challenging. An additional 4 miles was added onto an already arduous run. Amazingly, Ben finished the course in 25 hours 12 minutes, placing 2nd overall and 1st male.

Ben described the race as “long, tiring, horrendous, exhilarating, and weirdly enjoyable”, again adding that perhaps a family day out with a picnic would be the best way to enjoy the setting in future! Donations to Ben’s chosen charity the Devon Air Ambulance have so far reached almost £6,000. There is still time to donate – the Just Giving link is below. Devon Air Ambulance provide immediate medical treatment in hard to reach areas, 24 hours a day. You can read more about Ben’s personal connection to the Devon Air Ambulance on our previous post or on the Just Giving page.

The first £500 of donations was matched by the Wernick Charity Fund-Matching Scheme. The scheme helps to support the fundraising efforts of Wernick staff across the group.
