Wernick Hire scores a hat-trick at Leading Lights Awards

30th November 2023
Wernick Hire recently achieved success in the environment category at the Considerate Constructors Scheme awards, emphasising the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility and net zero. The accolades include the Environment Overall Organisation and Energy Efficiency awards for their “net zero by 2040” initiative.

Wernick Hire received recognition for its comprehensive Carbon Management Plan, targeting a 45% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and an annual carbon emission reduction of 6.7%. In the past year, the company completed 11 projects, saving 175,000 kWh and 41 tonnes of CO2e, whilst installing nearly 150 kWp of solar capacity across their estate.

Key projects involve upgrading LED lighting, installing voltage optimisation units, deploying solar panels, installing smart plug sockets, and transitioning the fleet to electric vehicles. Wernick also focuses on waste management, implementing a single supplier arrangement, reducing single-use plastics, and adopting a paperless office. The company collaborates with suppliers on their net zero journeys, setting a standard in the industry.

In the Individual Achievement Award category, Alexis Massey, Group Sustainability Manager, who is a key figure behind Wernick Hire’s net zero vision, was recognised as the Environment Champion. Alexis orchestrated initiatives, such as smart energy management systems and the transition to electric vehicles, the installation of Voltage Optimisation units at our highest energy-consuming site and fostering a culture of monthly data collection and performance metrics. This has instilled vigilance among staff and healthy competition between teams.

Wernick Hire acknowledges these awards as a testament to its team’s collective effort in advancing sustainability for a greener, more sustainable future.

Awards won:

  • Environment Overall Organisation Award 2023
  • Energy Efficiency Award 2023
  • Alexis Massey, Individual Achievement Award Environment Champion 2023

I’m delighted to be recognised by the Considerate Constructors Scheme at the CCS Awards for our net zero initiative. We won the Organisation Environment Award ahead of some stiff competition from major contractors and our own Alexis Massey won an individual environmental award. Thank you to the CCS team for putting on a fabulous event.
