Lex Massey, the Sustainability Manager at Wernick Group, has recently taken on a new role as the Chair of the Sustainability Committee at the Modular and Portable Building Association (MPBA). This role is an exciting development for both Lex and the industry, highlighting his commitment to promoting sustainable practices in the modular and portable buildings sector.

The Sustainable Committee aims to focus on developing industry standards and guidance focused on sustainability. Lex saw his involvement with the MPBA as a great opportunity to further both Wernick Group’s and the sector’s goals. As Wernick is already a full member of the MPBA, it was an easy decision for Lex. The MPBA allows Wernick to extend its influence within the sector, help solve business problems, reach new opportunities and ensure they keep up to date with developments in an evolving industry. This is particularly critical as the industry strives to achieve net zero emissions and adapt to evolving technologies.

With two decades of experience in sustainability, Lex is eager to make a meaningful impact in his new role. “This is an exciting time for the modular and portable sector as we embrace sustainability and build on the current success. There are a lot of benefits to modular and portable buildings as we can offer either a holistic service-based solution for temporary requirements. A key part of my role is to gather data, provide the narrative and to build case studies that showcase our sector’s capabilities.” Commented Lex.

As Chair of the Sustainability Committee, Lex’s responsibilities include leading the board and encouraging sustainable practices within the industry. “My role involves promoting the work of our members and suppliers, helping to build a clear evidence base for the modular and portable sector and the part that it can play towards net zero. A key initial step is trying to standardise and harmonise carbon data expectations and what tools/standards we need to follow. Each of our members are on their respective journeys and at different maturity levels, we want to help our members understand carbon, what it means to them and most importantly, what the opportunities are.”

Promoting sustainability in the modular and portable building sector presents its own set of challenges. Lex notes that one of the biggest challenges is making the concept of net zero easy to understand. Lex needs to provide clear actions that should be considered with the aim of reducing carbon emissions. Despite these challenges, there are many opportunities for the sector, and there is a lot of excitement about what has been achieved and what is possible in the future.

Lex’s work at the MPBA will focus on achieving net zero, with an emphasis on carbon and the circular economy. By establishing a common understanding of net zero, Lex aims to create a clear path for the industry to follow, similar to the standards already in place for quality and safety. Another key aspect of his role involves attending industry events, where he frequently speaks on exhibition stands, participates in panel discussions and Q&A sessions and engages with industry professionals to share insights and drive sustainability forward.

One of Lex’s key projects with the Committee is the development and publication of the ‘Non-Domestic Modular and Portable Building Roadmap to Net Zero’. This project aims to help MPBA members understand, reduce and share best practices for lowering their carbon emissions. It sets a clear path towards achieving net zero.

Lex Massey’s new role with the MPBA is a significant milestone in his career and in the modular and portable building sector’s journey towards sustainability. His dedication and experience will be crucial in guiding the industry towards a more sustainable future. As the sector faces new challenges and opportunities, Lex’s leadership will play a key role in promoting sustainable practices and achieving net zero.

“I started Wernick’s journey three years ago and now want to help others by simplifying the transition and acting as a sounding board for our members.” added Lex.
