Expanding SEN provision with modular accommodation

Requirement

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council required additional specialist teaching accommodation at Kirkleatham Hall School, a community special school for pupils aged 2–19 with severe learning and physical difficulties.

Having recently completed a £2 million facility-investment project at the school, the Council identified the need for 12 additional SEN places and needed a further building to accommodate that growth.

As a previous supplier, Wernick Refurbished Buildings was selected based on its prior performance and reliability in this education sector.

  • Client name: Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council
  • Project name: Classroom accommodation for SEN provision
  • Sector: Education
  • Location: Kirkleatham, Redcar
  • No. of modules: 6
  • Accommodation type: Refurbished modular classroom block

Solution

Wernick delivered a six-bay refurbished modular classroom building to meet the school’s needs. Internally, the building was fitted out to include: two classrooms, kitchen facilities, storerooms, accessible toilets with IPS specification and a cloakroom area.

On the exterior, the specification comprised wrapped windows, aluminium doors, a fixed door canopy, front and side elevations clad in Dura composite, rear elevation finished in Van Dyke Brown plastisol and a matching building skirt.

Despite planning delays and site-groundworks challenges, which pushed the schedule from 2024 into 2025, Wernick provided guidance on groundworks and installation and worked closely with the school and Council to ensure the building was ready for the start of term in September 2025.

The building feels brand new, it’s spacious, high-quality and nothing like a temporary classroom. It has created a lovely, permanent-feeling environment for our pupils, and they absolutely love it. I would definitely recommend Wernick Refurbished Buildings.
