Supporting local sports with a 7-bay modular facility

Requirement

South Tyneside Council required a new modular facility to replace the existing building at Gypsies Green Recreation Ground.

The site is home to South Shields Harriers running club, South Shields Velo Cycling Club and South Tyneside Football Club. By investing in modern, high-quality facilities, the Council aimed not only to meet the needs of these community sports groups but also to attract more sporting events. This, in turn, supports local tourism and the economy, bringing more participants and spectators into the Borough.

The Council was already familiar with Wernick through its long-standing relationship with Wernick Hire and subsequently engaged Wernick Refurbished Buildings to deliver the project.

  • Client name: South Tyneside Council
  • Project name: Gypsies Green Recreation Ground
  • Sector: Leisure
  • Location: South Shields
  • No. of modules: 7 bays
  • Accommodation type: Changing rooms and club room

Solution

Following a competitive process, Wernick Refurbished Buildings was successfully awarded the tender, which was weighted on both the tender value and the refurbishment process.

The 7-bay refurbished modular building was configured to provide a versatile and functional space, including a lobby, changing rooms, shower and toilet facilities, club room, kitchen, canteen, cleaners’ cupboard and a plant room.

The external finish features; electrically operated roller shutters, anthracite-wrapped windows, steel entrance doors and a moorland green plastisol main body skirt with olive green fascia.

The new facility provides modern, accessible and functional accommodation for local sports clubs and visiting teams. The upgraded amenities are expected to improve user experience for existing clubs, increase opportunities for hosting sporting events, enhance the reputation of Gypsies Green as a community sporting hub and contribute to the local economy by drawing more participants and spectators to the area.

“We’re proud to have partnered with South Tyneside Council on this project, delivering a modern, refurbished modular facility that meets the needs of multiple local sports clubs. Our team worked closely with the Council to ensure the building was not only functional and cost-effective but also designed to enhance the user experience and support the wider community. It’s rewarding to see how refurbished modular solutions can provide high-quality, sustainable facilities that make a real difference at a local level.”
