Solution

Cardiff Council ran a mini competition via the SEWSCAP framework to select a contractor to deliver a new SEND classroom block. This was won by Wernick Buildings, who were happy to work to the councils enhanced employer requirements to deliver a suitable teaching environment, satisfying the client’s initial concerns about the suitability of modular construction for this project.

Despite the onset of the COVID19 pandemic, the project was completed in time to start the new school term. Wernick enforced strict social distancing measures and enhanced health and safety protocols to ensure work could continue through the pandemic.

The single story building contains four classrooms, each equipped with storage, DDA compliant toilet and shower rooms, and a withdrawal area to provide a calmer environment for pupils. To accommodate the particular needs of the pupils who would be using the classrooms, Wernick upgraded their standard specification to include enhanced acoustic flooring specification, impact resistant plasterboard to all wall faces, and high spec glazing to all windows, doors and screens.

Externally, the building is finished with facing brickwork and a trussed roof to provide a traditional appearance. Wernick also delivered landscaping around the building, including a traditional playground and soft play area.

The Wernick team were excellent to work with from start to finish. Teamwork was at the heart of everything, and the team committed from the outset to deliver the project on time. Working relationships were excellent, and this facilitated first class communication and ultimately the delivery of a highly successful project.
