Requirement

Abbey School in Rotherham, South Yorkshire required additional teaching space in order to accommodate more students. Abbey School is a mixed special school catering to children aged 5 to 19 years with moderate and complex learning difficulties.

Nexus Multi Academy Trust contacted Wernick Refurbished Buildings for this project on behalf of the school. Nexus Multi Academy Trust is a trust that works with a variety of schools including Abbey School and it has an ethos of preparing students for life beyond their school years.

The school required a warm and welcoming environment to make students feel comfortable and engaged in their learning. The classrooms needed to be smaller than usual to ensure students receive personalised attention and support.

Solution

Wernick Refurbished Buildings delivered a refurbished 12-bay modular building consisting of four classrooms, a breakout area, a storage room, offices and toilets. The design also features a porch and cladding to blend seamlessly with the surrounding woods.

Besides delivering the refurbished modular building, Wernick provided a comprehensive turnkey solution which included groundworks, foundations, main connections, car park and level access.

Throughout the project, Wernick, Nexus Multi Academy Trust and Abbey School worked together to address several challenges. These included preserving the habitat of local badgers and adhering to planning constraints on the green belt site. The building was adapted to fit into its natural surroundings, maintaining the area’s aesthetic while providing an ideal facility for the students.
