‘Fantastic’ New Building
“Fantastic”, was the opinion of more than one member of staff at St Silas Church of England Primary School as they viewed the classrooms in their newly completed building. In fact Hillary Hinchliff, the school’s head teacher, was heard to say, “They just won’t want to move out of it!”, which may sound a strange comment to make, unless you knew that the new building is on hire to the school for only two years, as Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council has set aside £3.5m to replace the existing Victorian school building in Clematis Street.
In the mean time the school has to continue to function, so Wernick Hire has responded by delivering a two-storey, modular building to the empty St Stephen’s Primary School site just two miles away. The new building is occupied by 151 children from Years 4 to 6 at St Silas, who are bussed to the temporary accommodation every school day while the old school site is redeveloped. Even with recent cutbacks in spending on education Wernick Hire’s quotation was considered the easiest and most cost-effective option.
The building has external, silent running 100 kVA generators that supply all the building’s electrical requirements, including the supply for lighting, hot water and wall mounted convector heaters.
The complete 20-bay building was delivered to site over three days. On-site finishing work took a further three weeks. So, in less than four weeks the building was ready for occupation. It’s equipped with 8 spacious classrooms, a staff room and toilet facilities. The floors are covered in carpet tiles, except the toilet areas, which are finished in non-slip vinyl.
What really delighted the school’s staff was the size of the classrooms and the quality of finish inside the building. That’s why they won’t want to move out.
