George Eliot Hospital Theatre

Requirement
As part of the George Eliot Hospital Trust’s 5-year strategy to meet numerous challenges, including those presented by COVID-19, they appointed Wernick Buildings to deliver a 30-bed modular building for orthopaedic elective and general elective patients in early 2021. In a second phase of works, the Trust required an additional theatre suite which was linked to the building in situ. The project demanded collaboration with the Trust’s chosen contractors to ensure the successful delivery of specialist services, for example, the installation of theatre canopies by MAT for full HBN and HTM compliance.

Solution
Developed specifically for this project, Wernick delivered a hybrid volumetric theatre suite solution with a 3m ceiling height. This meant developing a floorless module design with a cast concrete floor solution. This hybrid solution provides the benefits of modular design alongside the performance of ‘traditional’ buildings. Wernick future-proofed the operation suite design to enable the Trust to offer a wider range of services in the future, should they wish. Options include more theatre space and recovery rooms, plus laparoscopic operating equipment installations.
The completed building is made up of 26 modules, with a floor space of 786 sqm. With its twin operating theatres, complete with satellite lighting, cameras and surgeons control panels, the building is an impressive addition to the hospital estate.
