Blenheim Road Flying Start

Requirement

Childcare professionals will often tell you that the early years of a child’s educational journey are the most important. That’s why Wernick strive to provide Flying Start facilities that are bright and engaging, encouraging learning through play.

Having already successfully delivered a number of Flying Start Centres throughout South Wales and the West, Wernick were selected to provide a new Centre for Torfaen Council at Blenheim Road.

The project was constructed and installed in just 20 weeks, despite the installation taking place next to a live school during term time and close proximity to school activities and main access points. All works were carried out during normal schools hours without any disruption to the nearby school.

The completed building consisted of a multi-use playroom with a unique transition area that combined attributes of indoor and outdoor play. Separated from the main playroom with a bi-fold glass door, this special area was covered in astro turf just like the outdoor yard, but enclosed and shuttered to give the children the ability to enjoy outdoor soft play whatever the weather.

For the parents, a multi-use classroom and meeting space was created, and an open plan office with kitchen facilities was supplied for the Flying Start staff. Separate adults and children’s toilet facilities were provided, with space for baby changing within the Flying Start provision. For extra safety and security the centre was fitted with digital locks, access control facilities and intruder alarms as well as finger guards and vision panels in the play area doors.

Kevin Lewis, Regional Sales Manager for Wernick Buildings told us; “Despite some challenges with the installation, we’ve delivered a building we’re proud of. The internal fit out provides a dynamic learning spaces for the children and parents, and spacious open plan office areas for staff. The addition of the indoor-outdoor transition area is a beautiful feature with real positive impacts for the children at the Centre; we’re really pleased with what we’ve achieved. ”
