Nathan's interview

What qualification did you undertake? Would you have undertaken the qualification without any support?

Wernick supported me through a HNC in Surveying from the University of South Wales. I’ve now been accepted onto a degree course in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management, which I’ll be starting on next year. I always wanted to go to university, and originally planned going straight from school. In a way I’m glad I didn’t, because I think I’ve enjoyed working while studying more than if I had gone to university full time. Not only has it been more enjoyable, I think the support and the resources I got at Wernick really helped me on the course.

How has that helped you perform your role?

The HNC has given me a broad perspective on how construction and the industry works, and some of the modules were particularly relevant to what I do at Wernick, especially relating to building regulations.

With some areas of the course it actually worked the other way as well, with the training I’d received in Wernick really helping me to get to grips with parts of the course, especially when looking at offsite and modular construction.

How do you think it will help your career?

The course has helped me in two ways. Firstly, it gave me practical knowledge that makes me better at doing my day to day role. Secondly, it means I can progress onto a degree course, which can provide loads of career benefits like job security and better salary prospects.
