What made you choose this programme?

Prior to submitting my application at Wernick Hire, I had been looking for training programmes that would offer ample opportunities to learn about different aspects of a successful business. In turn, I came across the Wernick Graduate Training Programme, which not only offered this but also offered the opportunity to achieve considerable career progression within the Wernick Group.

Why did you choose a career in construction? Why Wernick?

For a while now, we have consistently seen a push for a more circular and greener economy throughout different industries. The global pandemic became a catalyst for this change within the construction industry. I found myself wanting to be a part of this transitionary period to more sustainable construction. Wernick closely aligned themselves with this transition by introducing their Carbon Management Plan and their goal to reach carbon zero by 2040.

During my training scheme, I have had the opportunity to work closely with the Group Sustainability Manager, Alexis Massey, on the Paint Shop Optimisation project for Wernick Hire. I’ve also had the opportunity to speak with various customers to assess how we can assist them in their own carbon journey.

How was your first month here at Wernick?

At the beginning of the programme, I worked on the hire desk at our Leeds depot where I was able to gain a full insight into the day to day running of a depot. I also attended numerous site visits and met with several of our suppliers, which significantly increased my knowledge regarding our product offering.

What were you doing before this?

Prior to joining Wernick, I was completing my MA degree in International Relations and Global Communications.

What are you looking to gain from this programme?

The programme offers a fantastic opportunity to learn different aspects of the business, both administrative and operational. Upon completion of this training programme, I hope to have gained an understanding of different aspects of management, including operations, asset management, sales & marketing, Health and Safety, and HR.

What do you enjoy most about this programme?

To date, I have very much enjoyed the variation of the programme. Within my first year, I have had the opportunity to work alongside several Depot Managers. I’ve also worked with our Internal Sales team and shadowed one of our Major Account Managers. I’ve been assigned various projects and attended training and sales workshops.

I certainly look forward to seeing what opportunities the second half of the scheme brings.
