Stephanie De Nitto – The Health, Safety & Environmental Advisor
I am the Health, Safety & Environmental Advisor for the South region which means that I assist with developing HS&E policies and their implementation across the Group.
After leaving university, I moved home and applied for a job with a nearby company, which just happened to be Wernick Events in Winchester. After about 18 months, I heard about the role of trainee H&S officer for the Group. As much as I wanted to apply, I felt nervous as I wasn’t sure I was right for the role. After I decided to apply, my colleagues were very encouraging and told me to go for it.
I think that your character helps you to stand out at Wernick, not just your skills. If you’re a fast learner you can pick things up, but I think having the right positive attitude can go a long way. And people are genuinely happy to see you progress and develop. After I was offered the role and completed my training, Simon Doran, Group Chief Executive, wrote to me to offer congratulations on doing well on my course, despite me moving away from his department!
The role that I’m doing now is very different to the Hire Controller position. As a Hire Controller, you are speaking to customers on a daily basis and a ‘project’ rarely lasts longer than a week. Now, staff at my depots are my ‘customers’ and we work on long-term projects and initiatives that can pull in various members of staff from the business and take a while to come to fruition.
I am rarely sat at a desk, I am often dealing with audits at one of the 13 depots in my region or I am attending a Wernick Construction site. Some clients require a HS&E representative on site, which does allow me to see how it all comes together at the end! I really enjoy seeing Wernick staff on site working safely using the guidelines we have helped to put in place and meeting a happy client.
When I’m not at depots or sites, I am keeping our section of the Wernick intranet up to date and adding safety alerts and Toolbox Talks. I also sit on the HS&E committee which drives forward HS&E innovations across the Group companies. These initiatives help to improve efficiency and safety in the workplace.
The department has developed at an unbelievable rate in the last two years. Three full time people are now part of the team and more support is on offer to depots than ever before. Our colleagues can contact us easily with any queries they may have. Everyone knows everyone here and it’s so easy to pick up the phone and get advice from another department or another Group company. No-one is ‘off bounds’, there are no secretaries to deal with if you want to speak to someone higher up.
I would absolutely encourage anyone to work at Wernick. It’s family orientated and staff of all levels work together. If you take an interest in a particular area, you may find yourself turning that into something really interesting and moving into a different Group company! Wernick also look to promote from within – you often see people who have been here for years making more of their career within the business.
Outside of work:
When I’m not at work, I spend a lot of time with my family. I’m half French and they really spoil me when I go to visit. I am currently planning my wedding and a move to Bristol in 2019. And when I can find the time, I love being creative in the kitchen.
