John Jaggon – The Director
I am the Group’s Finance Director.
Finance plays such an integral part of the business, so my role as Finance Director involves liaising with various different departments throughout the Group. It is my responsibility to ensure that each of our operating companies are kept abreast of all relevant financial information to enable management to make key operational business decisions. I am also a member of the Executive Board and work closely with my fellow directors in agreeing the strategic and operational direction for the Group.
I joined the Group in October 2014 having spent the previous seven years as Finance Director for a niche property developer based in London. In 2015 I formally took on the role and I have to say it was very much a baptism of fire! Not only did I have the previous year’s financial results to finalise and publish, but I also had to contend with not one but three external audits. And just when I thought things were going to settle down for a while we acquired the assets of another business. During my first year I also restructured the Finance Department, an achievement I am immensely proud of. Our people our key to our success so it was essential that everyone was satisfied with the new reporting lines I introduced. I am pleased to say that this has integrated very well.
It’s hard for me to pick a favourite aspect of my job; I would have to say it’s the daily interaction with my team that I enjoy the most. Without them we would not be able to provide the services we do for our customers within the Group. It’s important to me as a Director that I use my knowledge and experience to give guidance and direction to those I work with; be they an Executive Board member or a new recruit to the Finance Department. I act as a mentor and advisor to my team, especially those who are just embarking on their careers in finance. I am presently guiding four members of staff through their professional accountancy exams. As a Fellow member of both the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), I’m quite used to taking exams by now and hopefully can impart some relevant knowledge on to them!
I have to say that I really enjoy how Wernick delivers a close sense of family despite being such a large, geographically spread organisation. I also enjoy the entrepreneurial flair and hands-on approach of the Executive Board, with its ability to make decisions quickly and efficiently. I feel it’s important for management to be approachable by all staff, and to be able to have open discussions with their teams. The Wernick Group is without a doubt a business that whole-heartedly embraces an ‘open-door’ policy. I am also determined to get round and visit all of our locations. I am pleased to say that I’m about halfway there now with my depot visits – so I’m halfway to meeting everyone!
I’d recommend a job at Wernick without hesitation. I’ve never worked in an organisation where the core family values are instilled throughout in such a way that has ultimately contributed towards the Group’s success. I’ve also never worked anywhere where multiple generations have worked for the same company or where long-service awards are continually being given – it’s a real compliment to the Wernick Group, the Wernick family, the management and its entire staff.
Outside of work, John enjoys spending time with his wife of 23 years, Jane, his 2 daughters, Rebecca and Katie, and walking his energetic cocker spaniel, Archie. Having previously worked for a film company, John can often be found at the cinema, although the days of pointing at his name in the credits of various films have long since passed. In addition, John is a keen West Ham supporter, an avid BBQ chef (weather permitting) and has recently taken up golfing, with the ambition of perfecting his swing until he can ‘realistically’ make a challenge on the fairways.
