David Watson – Contracts Manager at Wernick Construction
As a Contracts Manager for Wernick Construction, I am responsible for all activities associated with the installation of permanent buildings.
This includes all aspects of health and safety in relation to the current Construction, Design & Management (CDM) regulations, site set up, client meetings, coordinating factory deliveries, overseeing all site operations including management of sub-contractors, ground works, first fix through to full fit out, including commissioning & compliance for fire and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) plus financial management including variations and valuations.
I make sure that all packages interface correctly, which means a lot of communication with all parties involved in each project programme ensuring that Wernick Buildings get value for money, whilst keeping within agreed deadlines and budgets.
I have just completed the handover of a £3.2m school extension in Polegate. I like to keep the end users involved in the whole build process and maintain communication throughout – I want them to know what they are getting with a modular building as people’s preconceptions can be different to the reality. We often work alongside architects who are used to working with modular but the end user isn’t always sold on the concept. However, I’ve noticed that people are starting to discover that there is more to modular than speed and price.
The teachers at the school are really happy with the end result and I do enjoy seeing the end user’s reaction to a building – the wow factor. I like seeing a building “come to life”, for example, school children using the classrooms and office workers sitting at their new desks. The speed of the build gives people a nice boost, we always hear “wow, that was quick”.
I started at the Wernick Group in December 2015. I was employed to manage Wernick Construction’s largest installation to date. A six-month programme to deliver a 4 storey, 156 module building to a site in central London, costing just over £5m. It was a huge undertaking with some 14 hour days and massive pressure to get it right. But all went well and the client has recently spoken to us about relocating all of the units to a second site!
Wernick is a friendly, family based company with a professional approach. I feel that I am part of a team with people who have my best interests at heart. The atmosphere feels less corporate compared to other companies and I feel my words are actioned and listened to. The company grows at a steady pace, adding to a feeling of security.
I hope to continue to deliver more fantastic looking buildings for many more years to come.
Outside of work:
I enjoy long walks around London and walking holidays with my wife and our friends. Plus I am a member of Tiptree Road Runners in Essex (I’m in the least fast group, always at the back). In 2019, I will be doing plenty of park runs, two 10 mile runs and two half marathons. I have to find some way to burn off all the beer!
