Nathan’s interview
I am the General Manager at Wernick Hire’s Wickford Depot, which means I get involved in just about everything!
At the core of what I do is ensuring that the depot is run to budget by controlling the operations. This involves anything from managing staff labour to getting out on site and supervising the installation of a building.
I must admit that my favourite bit of the job has to be getting out on site and supervising the installation of a building. My proudest moment in Wernick (apart from riding a bike from London to Brighton) was my first classroom install, which I drove from start to finish. I priced it, completed the site survey, managed the labour and organised the refurbishment of the units. It wasn’t a huge job in the grand scheme of things, but for me it was two years in the making.
This is because I was one of the first people to come through Wernick’s two year Graduate Trainee scheme which let me experience everything the Group had to offer in terms of roles. While I was tempted by the construction and permanent side of the business, I ultimately chose to work in Wernick Hire. I came into the Banbury Depot as Assistant Manager and was promoted to my current position nine months later.
The path to my current position was laid out from the start of the scheme. I was told how things would go if I performed well, and everything I was told would happen, has happened. This is really only the start of my career.
I have been well looked after by Wernick ever since I started. One of the pros of working in a family run business is the shorter chains of command, which meant that even as a trainee I was being mentored by Company Directors. Even though I’ve obviously got a lot more responsibility now, I know that if I ever find myself in need of support it’s still only a phone call away.
It’s great to be part of a growing industry as well, and with our products always evolving we’re constantly able to exceed client expectations. I often get the sense from clients that Wernick have a good reputation behind them, which is a nice feeling to have.
Hobbies and interests
Nathan is also a keen sportsman and plays football, golf and squash as well as enjoying skiing and travelling.
