Wernick Shortlisted for Welsh Construction Awards

12th March 2019

The Active Office, built by Wernick Buildings in conjunction with the Active Buildings Centre, has been nominated for two prizes in this year’s CEW Awards.

The awards, organised by Constructing Excellence in Wales, recognise industry best practice, helping to ‘highlight the industry’s role in creating a built environment in Wales that’s fit for the future’.

Sustainability, community engagement and modern methods of construction are central themes of the awards this year, reflected in categories like ‘Digital Construction’ and ‘Integration & Collaborative Working’.

Over 90 projects were entered into the awards for 2019 and judges noted that the standard continues to improve year-on-year.

Representatives from shortlisted businesses will present to a panel of judges before final decisions are made.

Offsite Award 2019

Wernick Buildings (in conjunction with SPECIFIC IKC and Fusion21) entered the Active Office at Swansea University Bay Campus into the Offsite Award category.

Construction of the Active Office took place at the Wernick Buildings factory in Port Talbot, South Wales.

The CEW recognises that offsite construction offers greater productivity and predictability and credits the industry with initiating innovative working practices.

Finalists demonstrated the tangible benefits of an offsite approach over a traditional one – such as time, cost and quality.

Sustainability Award 2019

SPECIFIC IKC (in conjunction with Swansea University, Wernick Buildings and Pursey and Ball) entered the Active Office into a second category, the Sustainability Award.

The building utilises available technology to harvest and store solar energy. Excess energy can be used to power electric cars and a neighbouring building, The Active Classroom. In just six months, the building proved the ‘buildings as power stations’ concept.

Winners will be announced at the awards dinner taking place on Friday 7th June 2019 at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport.
