ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

Introduction

It is the Wernick Group of Companies policy to review all their activities with regard to the impact they may have on the environment.

Considerations under review include the use of sustainable materials; the minimising of the use of energy; the use of materials that can be re-cycled; creating a healthy and pleasant working environment for employees and to the effective control of all emissions and waste products.

Materials
  • This organisation supports the development of credible timber certification schemes, which are based on publicly available forestry standards drawn up in a fully participatory, transparent, and objective manner and backed by independent auditing. Where possible this organisation will prefer timber and wood products sourced from forest areas certified under these schemes.

  • Where independently certified timber is not available, this organisation will prefer timber and wood products from suppliers that have adopted a formal Environmental Purchasing Policy for those products and that can provide evidence of a commitment to that Policy.

  • All insulation used is CFC free.

  • Risk Assessments are carried out on all materials and chemicals and if any harmful elements identified, alternative materials are employed.

  • All wood waste is taken for recycling, and off-cuts offered to the staff and public for alternative uses.

Offices

All electrical items, e.g. lights and PC's are switched off when not in use.

The volume of paper used throughout the group is considerable and the following practices are actively employed to reduce paper use:
  • Photocopying on both sides of the paper.

  • Re-using paper printed on only one side for internal printing, e.g. telephone message pads, draft work, etc.

  • Re use envelopes for internal mail.

  • Waste paper is shredded and used for packaging and animal bedding. Where not suitable for shredding it is taken to an approved re-cycle centre.

  • Internal correspondence is, where appropriate, written on half sheets of paper.

  • Information where possible is stored electronically.

  • Replacement photocopies, fax machines are selected with energy conservation standby functions.

  • Printer cartridges are re-processed.

Factory/Workshops

All machines are maintained to ensure optimum operating efficiency.

All equipment is turned off when not in use.

Main entrances and exits have curtains or doors to retain energy.

Travel/Vehicles

All company cars and vans are maintained to ensure maximum running efficiency.

Vehicles are purchased with a view to emissions.

Company travel is kept to a minimum by planning journeys, grouping meetings and car sharing.

The directors ensure that each manager reviews his/her area of activity and new ideas and policies are put to the management meetings for consideration.

The management and employees regard the environment as an importablent issue and continuously strive to improve it.
